The day is finally here! The 2014 Listen to Your Mother season is up on YouTube!
One of my greatest regrets is that I can’t personally attend every single Listen to Your Mother show. It’s impossible logistically, as there were shows in 32 cities this season, many of them on the same day and at the same time. Some people might think my wish is a bit excessive; after all, if you’ve gone to one show you’ve seen all there is to see in the world of Listen to Your Mother, right?
Nope. Not even close.
Every show is different. Every year is different. And as hard as it might be for someone to believe, every story is different. Even if two people speak about the same subject–infertility, being a single parent, a child’s coming out or the love we feel for our children–each expression is as unique as the person standing at that mic, baring a bit of his or her soul, sharing that personal and distinct story.
The next best thing to traveling to another city to see a show in person is to watch the videos on YouTube. I love that the videos are organized by city, and they run in order of the original show. I know I’ll be spending some quality time with my laptop these next few days, getting lost in the words of talented and dynamic storytellers.
Of course I’m partial to the stories–and the women who shared those stories–of the Kansas City show. Being a part of the LTYM family in the capacity of co-Director was truly a privilege for me, and I’m so proud of the show that we brought to Kansas City! I hope you’ll watch each of their videos:
I also was able to see the Oklahoma City show this year. My sister, Laura Allen, was a cast member and I was so proud of her. Her piece is a poignant, honest reflection on what it means to her to be a mother to each of her three children. I hope you’ll watch hers, as well.
